RESIDENTS in Thornton who are worried about impending traffic chaos caused by Thornton's new recycling plant have been given reassurance by Lancashire County Council.
People living on the Pheasant Wood estate in Thornton and Springfield Terrace in Fleetwood launched a campaign following claims 400 lorries would travel the streets on their way to the £125m recycling plant.
But Lancashire County Council has said th
ere should only be 53 lorries each day and that some could be routed away from the housing estates at weekends.
In addition there are likely to be 99 cars.
Pheasant Wood campaigners say they will wait for more details on the numbers but will continue to campaign over potential problems over a right turn from Amounderness Way into Bourne Way, the road which runs through Pheasant Wood.
Ken Teare of the Friends of Pheasant Wood group said: "It's hard to understand why we have had this sudden drop in numbers. I am sure there is a simple explanation and perhaps when we hear it we will have a different opinion.
"But we will continue to make our point over that right turn. On that hinges someone's life in the future – that is our chief concern."
Residents will be able to put their views forward at a liaison group, which will be set up by the county council before the waste plant opens.
County Coun Penny Martin told residents about the number of lorries and cars following a meeting of County Hall bosses.
She said: "I hope it will allay the fears of residents. The important thing is, we have listened. It is also about being realistic about what can be done."
Pheasant Wood residents were worried the lorries would go down Bourne Way and wanted them to go via the Eros Roundabout further along Amounderness Way.
But that would mean lorries would travel within yards of homes on Springfield Terrace on Fleetwood Road.
County Coun Martin said that of the 53 trucks, 25 were controlled by Wyre Council and she would be writing to Wyre to see if they could be diverted via the Eros Roundabout.
Other possibilities included diverting trucks away from Bourne Way at weekends.
