A 59-YEAR-OLD Thornton man died following a head on road smash in East Lancashire at the weekend.

Leonard Miller was a passenger in a Ford Mondeo that collided with a Ford Ranger pick-up truck at Clayton-le-Dale.

The accident – on the A59 Longsight Road – happened at 5.15pm on Saturday, said Lancashire Police.

Mr Miller was taken by ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital, where he died soon afterwards.

The driver of the Mondeo, Mr Miller's wife, also believed to be in her 50s, was cut free by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital where she was detained with abdominal and knee injuries. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A family of four from the Manchester area – a man and a woman and their children – were travelling in the Ford Ranger. A passenger in the rear suffered a fractured right wrist and another passenger also in the back, received minor injuries.

A section of the road was closed for more than three hours by police shortly after the accident. Traffic was diverted.

An investigation was carried out.
