THE beach environment has been protected during work to cut up the Riverdance.
And those responsible for the massive task have been praised for their efforts in doing so.
Bosses from the Marine Fisheries Agency and the Secretary of State's Representative (SOSREP) – the man in overall charge of the removal – say they are delighted that Blackpool's beach has been kept oil free during the tricky operation.
It was feared at first that oil on board the Riverdance could spill out affecting the water, the sand and marine life.
But with almost all oil now off the vessel, demolition firms, Hancock's Contractors Ltd and their sub-contractor PGC Demolition Ltd, have been praised for keeping the beach safe.
Hugh Shaw from SESREP said he was delighted with the progress they are making.
He said: "The contractors are taking their time which is very pleasing from my point of view because it shows they are taking every effort to ensure the beach is clean.
A United Utilities sewage pipe which runs underneath the beach also rests under the Riverdance and there were fears it could be damaged by the weight of the wreck.
Officials say, although it has suffered slight damage, there is no danger of the pipe bursting.
But a spokesman for the firm said it will be a relief though when the Riverdance has been removed.
