PLANS for a high capacity Titan jail in Thornton have been scrapped.
But the town could still be considered for a 1,500 inmate prison under new Government proposals.

Thornton was on a secret Government list of 76 potential sites for huge new 2,500-prisoner capacity Titan jails.

The document, revealed under the F
reedom of Information Act, said a location named as Thornton Secure Site, had been nominated by the Ministry of Justice.

But now it seems the Home Office is likely to opt for a handful of new 1,500-capacity jails instead.

And it is believed the list of 76 potential Titan jail sites could be used when selecting the new jail locations.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “When we start the search for further new sites we will embark on a fresh exercise. Some of the previous sites on the list may be considered.”

Joan Humble, MP for Blackpool North and Fleetwood, spoke out against the use of the site in Thornton.

She said: “If the Thornton site being talked about is the secure part of the ICI site, then I would say it is absolutely the wrong place.

“That is a site for business development and there are successful businesses on it. Not only that, but it is very near a housing development.”

Other sites in the area being looked at include Kirkham and Blackpool.
