Fleetwood Town will take a vital 1-0 lead into the second leg of their League Two play-off semi final at Highbury on Friday.
Matty Blair’s bundled second half goal was enough to break the deadlock at Bootham Crescent and end York City’s 17 game unbeaten run.
Town might have been ahead before the break, David Ball and Antoni Sarcevic with half chances to break the deadlock.
And it was Ball who set up the winner, twisting and turning in the box and squaring for Blair who got the last touch in a goal line melee.
Iain Hume should have added a late second, set up by Josh Morris and beating Nick Pope, only to fire wide with the goal gaping.
Michael Coulson made York’s best chances, his effort flashing past Chris Maxwell’s far post the closest York came to levelling.
Kick off on Friday is at 7.45pm and Wembley awaits the winner.
