A Barry Corr double sank Fleetwood Town at Roots Hall.
Corr found the net in the 22nd minute, getting on the end of a deep cross from Kevan Hurst who had been a constant menace to debutant left back Charlie Taylor.
It was the culmination of a brief but effective spell of pressure from the home side in a half where the visitors probably had the best of the play.
Antoni Sarcevic was back to his lively self and had the best chance for Fleetwood, Daniel Bentey blocking his shot after David Ball’s pass had unlocked the Southend defence.
Town simply didn’t turn up after the break.
Shackled and shaky they conceded a second with 10 minutes to play, Liam Hogan upending Will Atkinson in the box, Corr with his second of the night from the penalty spot.
Jon Parkin and Jamille Matt couldn’t inspire a misfiring Town attack, Fleetwood suffering just a second away defeat.
