Ryan concentrates on promotion push

ON-loan defender Ryan Edwards is putting his hopes of a starting place at Blackburn to the back of his mind as he aims to help Fleetwood to promotion.

Edwards enjoyed a baptism of fire in the 2-0 defeat at Aldershot on Saturday, making his Highbury debut on Tuesday in the 1-1 draw with Cheltenham Town.

And he’s happy to be back playing football.

Edwards said: I’m pleased to have got on and got playing for Fleetwood.

“Hopefully I’ve got plenty more to come and I can help in the push for promotion.”

That’s a serious dream for the 19-year-old, who is on a month-long loan from Ewood Park.

He said: ”It’s all about the push for promotion.

“That’s everybody’s aim here.

“Even if it’s not automatic we want to push for the playoffs and go up that way.

“The lads have been saying how important going up is to them.

“They’ve got themselves in a great position and nobody wants to throw it away,

“Back to back promotions would be a fantastic achievement.

“The lads are hungry for it, they want to step up a league again and I believe they can.”

Edwards, who has already spent a spell on loan at Rochdale this season, explained how his Highbury move came about.

He said: “We had a reserve game last Monday at Blackburn and we were in for a recovery session on the Tuesday.

“The reserve team manager
informed me Fleetwood were interested.

“As soon as I knew that I wanted to get going and be here as soon as possible.

“They’ve got a few centre backs at Blackburn, they’ve just brought another one in.

“As soon as that happened I got the go ahead to go back out on loan and I was desperate to come to Fleetwood.”

And despite his desire to play at the highest level for Michael Appleton’s Rovers, Edwards is focused on the task at hand.

“I’m a Blackburn player,” he said.

“And while I’m here I’ll keep an eye on the lads and see they’re doing OK. But my focus is on Fleetwood, getting them as high up the table as I can.”

And the youngster is already finding his feet and enjoying working alongside Town skipper Rob Atkinson.

“Rob Atkinson has helped me a lot,” he admitted

“He talked me through the game on Saturday.

“I hope he keeps doing that and I’ll do the same for him.”

And Edwards has been equally impressed with manager Graham Alexander.

“He seems a good coach and a great guy,” said the centre half.

“I’m really looking forward to working more with him.”
