Micky Mellon congratulated Northwich on their victory but felt a lot of his Fleetwood players had let themselves and the travelling supporters down.

What’s more, they had blown an opportunity to force themselves into his reckoning for today’s FA Cup replay at Yeovil.

Manager Mellon said: “It is obviously disappointing to lose any game, that’s for sure, but I thought we put out a team that could get us through the tie.

“But overall, they played the better football, and thoroughly deserved to go through.

“In our defence, there were a lot of squad players who were flung together and had never really played together before, but we never deserved anything more than we got.

“I always pick a team I believe can win, and I felt 100 per cent that they would compete and do better than they did.

“A lot of people were given the opportunity to push into that group of players we didn’t take to Northwich, and they haven’t done themselves any good.

“It really has no relevance to tonight’s match.

“You are probably looking at nine or ten who didn’t take part (coming back at Yeovil), but it was an opportunity for a few to say, ‘Hey, have a look at me.

“‘I’m good enough to stand up and be counted in that other group, and that never happened.’

“I will take responsibility for that, but I felt the team on paper should have given a better account of themselves.”

Mellon felt individual errors contributed to the defeat, saying: “We scored a decent goal but some of their goals were pretty ridiculous to be honest.

“I never want to pick people out but goalkeeping errors probably cost us all three goals.”

The game was not without positives for Mellon, who added: “Ryan Crowther did well.

“That’s what I want him to be and he can be pleased with his day’s work.

“He is a massive plus for us.

“It’s also a little bonus that we picked up no injuries, but I’m just disappointed for the travelling fans who came to watch.

“I can assure them I put out a team that should have performed better.

“We must now regroup and look forward to a massive game at Yeovil.”
