Fleetwood Town v Oxford United. Jamille Matt celebrates his goal.

GRAHAM Alexander insisted getting the basics right was the key to victory as Fleetwood Town brushed aside in-form Oxford United.

Jamille Matt and Ryan Crowther both scored their first league goals for the club, substitute Jon Parkin adding a late third as Fleetwood put back to back defeats firmly behind them.

Alexander said: “We wanted to improve on our last performance at home and we certainly did that,

“We wanted to be more competitive and I think we got the rewards for the effort we pit in.

“Every one of the lads was fantastic today and the result was deserved.

“It was a hard working, intense and professional performance.

“We want to get the basics in place and that includes teamwork and a team ethic and we’ve seen that today.”

The home side grabbed the lead after just ten minutes thanks to a defensive howler from Michael Raynes.

The job of clearing the ball ahead of an advancing Gareth Evans seemed simple enough, the centre half somehow firing straight at Jamille Matt - who knew little about the incident until the ball hit the top left hand corner.

Town had a second ruled out ten minutes later when captain Rob Atkinson was judged to have fouled a Us defender before heading home, but did bag a second early in the second half.

Another mistake at the back, this time from Damien Batt gifted the ball to substitute Ryan Crowther who drove into the box, finishing low past Wayne Brown.

With the Us already two down substitute Adam Chapman produced the best opportunity for the visitors, his set piece tipped over by Fleetwood’s Scott Davies.

But Fleetwood added a third five minutes from time, Evans cross pushed back across the face of goal by Jamie McGuire, substitute Jon Parkin tapping home.

Oxford boss Chris Wilder admitted his side had made a number of defensive mistakes.

He said: “We’ve played a massive part in our own downfall and the goals we have conceded have been ridiculous.

“At any level if you make mistakes like that you’re going to be punished and we have been and rightly so.

“We’ve not done enough today.”
