FLEETWOOD Town have issued a warning to teams expecting the Highbury club to splash the cash in the wake of the £1m transfer of Jamie Vardy to Leicester.

Fleetwood, newly-promoted to the Football League, say the Vardy money will NOT be burning a hole in their pocket and does not mean a headlong dash into the transfer market.

The Blue Square Bet Premier champions are already forming a battleplan to recruit new blood for their historic first season in the league, and the priority will be to sign top-quality players at that level who are out of contract with their current clubs.

Town have already drawn up a list of players, which manager Micky Mellon has described as ‘exciting’.

He added: “The priority is to keep the club financially secure for the future, because I am told we are the smallest town to have a Football League club.

“We have only ever paid transfer fees for four or maybe five players, and that will continue.

“I don’t expect that we will be buying anybody, though that could change – but we will mainly be looking at players coming in on free transfers.

“By that I mean good quality players who are out of contract with their clubs.”

Meantime, Vardy has spoken of his move to the Championship, and his desire to make it into the Premier League, even though he has yet to play in the Football League at the age of 25.

He said: “It is obviously going to be a big step, but I am confident in myself that I can do it.

“My manager Nigel Pearson told me about where he wanted the club to go and where he wants to be next year and I wanted to be a part of that.

“I won’t stop running and hopefully with that the goals will come.”
