Town ready to release Briggs

MIDFIELDER Keith Briggs has been told he can leave Fleetwood Town and find another club.

The 30-year-old finds himself down the pecking order with the Conference champions and Town manager Micky Mellon is prepared to release Briggs (left) midway through his two-year contract so he can find first-team football elsewhere.

It was a similar situation with Peter Till, whose Town contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier this month.

Mellon said: “Like Peter, Keith is a great lad but sometimes things just don’t work out.

“He was injured last season and found it hard to get back into a side on a long unbeaten run.

“He is still a Fleetwood Town player at present but I expect something to happen soon.”

Signed from Kidderminster last summer, Briggs made 18 appearances for Town, scoring his only goal at Hayes and Yeading last December.

He found opportunities particularly hard to come by after the turn of the year, playing only twice.

The competition in midfield ahead of Town’s first League Two campaign has intensified with the arrivals of the experienced Damien Johnson and most recently Barry Nicholson, whose signing from Preston was confirmed last week.

Mellon added: “Barry is a good player, who I’ve known and watched for a long time. It was a deal I wanted to get done after we lost Peter Cavanagh.”

Derbyshire-born Briggs previously made around 150 appearances in two stints with Stockport County.

Town’s programme of pre-season friendlies starts today with a behind-closed-doors encounter with Gateshead at Highbury.
