Nicholson says serious work is ahead

Barry Nicholson opens the scoring for Fleetwood against Tranmere Rovers, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

BARRY NICHOLSON was pleased to grab his first goal in a Fleetwood shirt, but called for a tighter display at the back than the one Town produced against Tranmere.

Nicholson’s 11th minute strike, teed up by David Ball, was the first since his summer move from Deepdale and helped Town to a 3-3 draw against Ronnie Moore’s men.

But the midfielder insisted his teammates must concentrate on cutting out errors in defence ahead of their Capital One Cup clash with Nottingham Forest next Monday.

He said: “It’s good to get that first goal, but the real stuff starts a week on Monday against Forest in the cup, so I’d prefer to save it for games like that.

“Saying that, it’s always nice to score and I think we played really well in the first half.

“We were a little sloppy in the second half and we know ourselves that we can’t concede goals like that, even in a friendly, so we’re a little disappointed with that.

“Maybe, two goals up in that first half, we’d have concentrated and got to the break without conceding it might have been a different game, but certainly we’re disappointed with the one’s we’ve given away.”

Nicholson said the focus in the dressing room was firmly fixed on being ready for the Forest curtain-raiser and their league opener against Torquay United a week on-Saturday.

He said: “We’ve got to be ready for the first game, that Forest cup game and the Torquay game in the league on the Saturday.

“Everything has been geared towards that.

“We got ourselves on to the winning track against Kilmarnock in the week and I thought we were going to win this one again.”

“But I’m sure come the Forest game we’ll be ready.”
