Mellon’s not scared of change

FLEETWOOD Town may have scored eight goals in two games but manager Micky Mellon insists he will have no qualms about changing a winning side.

Mellon adopted the same approach last season, when he would tweak his team to “freshen things up” during their 29-match unbeaten Conference run, and he sees no reason to change that policy now Town are a Football League club.

The Town boss told The Gazette: “Nothing has changed from last season in that respect. We still operate with a squad of first-team players and I won’t hestitate to make changes match by match.

“We won’t do anything reckless, but it’s all about winning games and I will put out what I think is the best team for each match.”

A three-match winning run has left Mellon in buoyant mood but he insisted: “We’re not the finished product yet.”

The manager added: “We mustn’t get over-excited and everybody needs to keep a level head because there’s a long way to go. Of course it’s good to see the hours of hard work on the training pitch paying off on the pitch, and the players deserve a lot of credit for the performance at Morecambe, but there are a lot of tough games to come.”

Last week, Town visited Rochdale for a Tuesday cup match they could perhaps have done without as Mellon’s squad was riddled with niggling injuries. A week on, and with a fully fit squad oozing confidence and momentum, a midweek game may have been no bad thing.

But Mellon will take what comes, adding: “There are pros and cons to midweek games. We would have been in good shape for one this week, but now we play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday (the first two of those home games against Northampton and Port Vale, clubs who have also made a promising start), so the extra rest and time to work will do us no harm.”

Mellon reaffirmed that he has no interest in testing the loan market at present: “I’m very happy with the group I have at the minute.”

- STEVEN Gillespie scored twice in Town’s 4-1 win away to a young Stoke City side yesterday.
