Fleetwood defender puts pace to test

Amari’i Bell admits Fleetwood have to find their attacking flair more often and he has a major part to play.

The defender appears to be Steven Pressley’s first choice at left back and has pace to burn.

But the 23-year-old is clear he hasn’t made the most of his natural talent, something he’s desperate to put right starting this afternoon at Barnsley.

“I’m very happy I’m starting to play games now,” said Bell.

“It’s what everybody wants to do.

“At the point in my career I’m at, it’s vital.

“I just need to kick on now and start performing.

“I’ve got the pace the gaffer wants.

“I don’t think I’ve been using it as much as I should have been.

“Maybe it’s a confidence thing, but I need to get over that.

“Hopefully in the next few games I can and we can get the wins which will lift us all.”

Bell played in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Burton Albion and Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United.

He believes there wasn’t a great deal difference in the overall performances - just tiny margins at either end of the field.

“In other games we’ve played well,” he said.

“We just concede silly goals really.

“We’re trying our hardest to eliminate that from our game and once we do we’ll have that better chance of winning.

“It’s down to concentration.

“When we conceded the goal on Tuesday it killed us.

“Hopefully if we can just concentrate from the off in our upcoming games we can get the results the overall performance deserves.

“You can see we’re more organised, better understanding tactically.

“We think we’ve got a great chance of winning.”

Fleetwood have won just three League One games this term but have scored four in each of those victories.

It’s an anomaly Bell admits is odd and he knows Town are crying out for consistency rather than the occasionally spectacular afternoon.

“It’s consistency,” he said.

“We know when we score goals they keep on coming.

“It’s just we have days when we don’t score any and we get punished by one little thing.

“We need to find that consistency.

“I don’t think there’s many teams who have only won three but have scored four in each of those.

“It shows we can do it but we’re not doing it enough.

“It’s hard to say what the difference has been.

“Maybe it’s just our mentality.

“It was difficult to take Tuesday, after coming off a result which was so good.

“We’ve got to make sure we put it right.”

And Bell echoed his manager’s thoughts - that Town need to be better building on their pressing game, creating chances from the errors they force.

He said: “When you get in the opposition’s face it’s hard for them to play.

“They start making mistakes.

“It’s like on Tuesday, they kept giving the ball away - we should have used that better.

“If we had done that better who knows what could have happened.”
