ANDY Pilley says the FA Cup draw against neighbours Blackpool is the best imaginable incentive for Fleetwood Town to beat Yeovil at the second attempt a week tomorrow.
Fleetwood’s reward for winning their second round replay in Somerset would be a home clash with the Seasiders in the new year, and for Town chairman Pilley that’s an even better draw than being paired with one of the Premier League’s most glamorous clubs.
He told The Gazette: “It’s a huge incentive and Blackpool is the best tie for us from every possible scenario.
“Had we drawn Manchester City, United or Liverpool, it would have been a bit of a circus for one day, but they would have brought a fringe team and we’d probably have lost.
“This is the ultimate cup derby between Championship and non-league and possibly the biggest tie on the Fylde coast for decades.”
Pilley won’t get ahead of himself but he added: “First we have a hugely difficult task at Yevil but not an impossible one. Our away form is better than our home form and we can’t possibly play as badly there as we did last Friday.
“We are fully focused on Yeovil but such is human nature that you can’t help but get excited about the possibility of Fleetwood v Blackpool.”
When the teams were last drawn together in the first round 31 years ago, it became Blackpool v Fleetwood because Town, though drawn out first, sacrificed home advantage for a bigger pay-day at Bloomfield Road. Asked if he may consider the same course of action, Pilley replied: “Certainly not. The tie would definitely be at Highbury.”
