Cavanagh heads for Highbury exit

FLEETWOOD Town will start their first-ever season in the Football League without Peter Cavanagh, who has joined Rochdale.

Cavanagh, whose displays in midfield and defence played a big part in Fleetwood winning the Blue Square Bet Premier title, has penned a one-year deal with Rochdale, who signed another ex-Fleetwood player earlier in the summer, striker George Donnelly.

Cavanagh failed to agree personal terms with Fleetwood, which led to the parting of the ways.

Town boss Micky Mellon said: “I’d like to place on record our thanks to Peter for his time at Fleetwood, and the part he played in winning the Championship. He’s always welcome at Highbury.”

Cavanagh links up with his old boss at Accrington, the new Dale boss John Coleman.

n Former Town striker Jamie Vardy has spoken of his determination to go further in the game.

Vardy left Highbury in the close season for around £1 million, which some regard as a huge gamble for a player who, at 25, has yet to play in the Football League.

Indeed, Vardy thought the chance to cut it at league level had passed him by, but now he has been given the opportunity, he is determined to make the most of it.

He told the Leicester website: “I was released by Sheffield Wednesday when I was 16, so I signed for my local team Stocksbridge.

“When you get released from a club like Wednesday you think it’s never going to happen, but I’ve put a lot of hard work in, and it’s paid off.

“I just want to carry on, and hopefully get into the Premier League with Leicester.”
