Bristol Rovers 1 Fleetwood Town 3

A second half brace from Jamille Matt and a late Jon Parkin cameo fired Fleetwood Town back into second spot in League Two and set up a mouth-watering top of the table clash.

Fleetwood welcome leaders Chesterfield to Highbury next weekend with just one points between the two teams.

At Bristol Rovers they re-affirmed their credentials as promotion contenders, shaking off the shock of a Gas leveller to secure a late win.

Neither side created chances in a dour opening 45 minutes, Matty Blair coming closest to breaking the deadlock, sliding in at the near post after Antoni Sarcevic had forced his way to the byline to cross.

But the game gradually opened up after the break, Town taking command.

Sarcevic could have put Fleetwood ahead but was thwarted by Steve Mildenhall in the Bristol goal, who turned the midfielder’s dipping long range effort over the bar.

And it’s no surprise League Two’s player of the month played a big hand in Fleetwood’s opener, charging down the right flank and cutting the ball back for Matt to provide a cheeky finish at the near post.

Rovers hit back almost immediately, Ryan Brunt with a precision cross-field pass, Andy Bond providing a cross from the left, John-Joe O’Toole heading home at the back stick.

Town were rattled and almost fell behind when Brunt sparked a goal-mouth scramble, woodwork, stray legs and Scott Davies’ body combining to keep the ball from crossing the line.

It was a turning point, Rovers’ fightback fizzling out and Fleetwood stepping up their own game.

And with five minutes remaining they were rewarded, thanks to the finest move of the game.

Matt started it, a neat one-two with Sarcevic and a sublime finish from inside the box.

Jon Parkin replaced Matt inside injury time and made his mark just two minutes later.

Sarcevic again was involved, showing strength in central midfield and feeding it out to sub Gareth Evans on the left.

His cross found Parkin unmarked at the back post, a nonchalant volley sealing victory.
