Chris Basham has called on fans to stick with Blackpool’s new defensive style.
The Seasiders have tightened up their act at the back after abandoning the gung-ho style introduced by former boss Ian Holloway.
It’s a tactic which has seen the Seasiders have their best start ever to a Championship season, sitting sixth in the table.
But after two goalless draws in a row, some fans have questioned the style, something Basham doesn’t agree with.
“The results are the all important thing,” he said.
“I was speaking to Stephen Dobbie the other day about it, who obviously knows about success in this division.
“He said as long as you are picking up points, that’s the main thing.
“I think because of the Holloway era the fans may be thinking about goals.
“But we have a change of manager here now and we think about playing a different way.
“We still score goals, but we don’t go gung-ho anymore.
“It’s not what we are about at the moment.
“The manager doesn’t want people bursting forward.
“If we are picking up points then that’s all that matters to me.
“All the lads are happy where we are in the league at the moment and that’s the main thing.”
Basham has featured in every Pool game so far this season, in six different positions.
He’s been used all over the park as Paul Ince struggled with lack of numbers in the early weeks of the season.
But he was back in central midfield for last weekend’s trip to Charlton.
He said: “It’s been strange to play centre midfield, but it’s been nice as well.
“I would obviously class that as my natural position, but I do miss playing on the wing sometimes.
“It’s felt different, but it’s felt right at the same time.
“Defensively we are looking very solid at the moment.
“That’s something the Gaffer puts emphasis on constantly, it’s how he wants us to defend.
“But maybe we have to just break teams down a little bit at the moment.
“Things just haven’t been breaking for us in attack which has been frustrating.
“But we know it will come again.”
Pool have enjoyed a solidstart to the league season, and face Wigan next weekend live on Sky Sports.
And Basham is delighted with the first few months of the season.
He said: “We are sixth in the league and only three points off second.
“Anyone who supports Blackpool Football Club would have taken that at the start of the season.
“We are full of confidence at the moment.
“We know we’ll score goals.”
