FREE swimming sessions have made a real splash in Wyre
Youngsters and pensioners are eligible for free use of local swimming pools and have been quick to sign up to the new scheme.

More than 1,000 people now have the free swimming card which gives access to the pools - and that’s in the fire three wee
ks of the scheme.

Introduced on April 1, cardholders can now swim for free during designated public swimming sessions in accordance with local programming on weekdays, some evenings and weekends at any of the pools.

The initiative is being delivered by Wyre Borough Council and Fylde Coast YMCA who operate the pools on their behalf.

Tom Pridmore, Director of Leisure services at Wyre Borough Council, said: “We are delighted that so many of our residents – young and old - have taken advantage of the free swimming sessions available to them in the borough

“We were confident that the scheme would be very popular with locals and the latest membership figures confirm just how successful free swimming has been across all three pools.

“Swimming is an enjoyable leisure activity suitable for all ages and abilities.

“It’s a wonderful to way to relax and improve your health and well-being especially if you swim regularly which the scheme allows you to do for free.

“If you are aged 16 or under or over 60 then you are eligible to join the scheme and I would urge you to join now and enjoy the associated benefits of swimming.”

Mike Vernon, Wyre Leisure Director for Fylde Coast YMCA, added: “We believe the government’s free swim initiative is a positive step forward to increasing levels of physical activity within the community. “

And it’s not too late for local residents to sign up to the scheme.

For a one-off administration fee of £1, together with proof of age, you can receive your card and start swimming at Fleetwood, Garstang and Poulton for free.

The application form, guide to eligibility and designated public swimming times are available to download at www.fyldecoastymca.org or www.wyrebc.gov.uk.
