THE fate of a travellers site in Preesall will be decided in August.
A planning application to make the group's stay on the controversial site on Lancaster Road more permanent was submitted earlier this year.

And now, the site, which was set up without planning permission, will be the subject of a crunch Wyre Council development control meeting this summer.

Neighbours and local councillors have already aired their fears about noise and disturbance to residents and the effect the camp will have on the local environment.

But Patrick Dundon, who lives on the site, said his family is hoping to make a permanent home in the area.

He said: "We are hoping to get it passed. We are just biding our time until we see what happens with the planning application."

Even though six tourers currently stand on the field, the travellers have temporarily moved to campsites in Leeds following a family birth.

Mr Dundon added: "My sister has had a newborn girl and she has a heart problem so we are having to go to the hospital every so often.

There's a lot of dust around the site in Preesall and she needs to be in a clean, stable place, that's what the doctors and nurses have told us.

"We need the facilities too.

"If I knew right now we'd be able to stay I'd be back to clean the area up but we're just going to have to wait and see."

Plans were submitted to Wyre Council in January followed by a temporary injunction which meant travellers could stay on the land, subject to certain restrictions, pending the outcome of the planning application.

Gary Payne, director of planning and regeneration for Wyre Council, said: "The site is extremely quiet. There's just half a dozen tourers with nobody occupying them."

Travellers who set up camp on land off Fairfield Road in Hardhorn were refused permission to set up a permanent home earlier this month.

Fylde councillors rejected the group's proposals after hearing residents' concerns over the impact on the landscape and environment.
