Axe to fall on public phone boxes

PUBLIC phone boxes are set to be axed by BT in rural Wyre.
The phone provider claims the public call boxes are under-used, saying some are used as little as once a fortnight.
Eleven phone boxes in Wyre, five in Fylde and one in Blackpool are on the hitlist.
The company says it has been reviewing its payphone network and claims that less than 60 per cent of the 61,700 kiosks in the UK are profitable.
The phone boxes in Wyre earmarked for closure are at the following locations:
Whin Lane, Out Rawcliffe
Mill Lane, Stalmine
Kiln Lane, Hambleton
Bradshaw Lane, Preesall
Pilling Lane, Preesall
Rosslyn Avenue, Preesall
Fleetwood Road, Fleetwood
Lancaster New Road, Cabus
Old Lancaster Road, Catterall
Smithy Lane, Claughton
Crossmoor, near Preston.
BT has said if local councils believe the under-used boxes are needed, however, it will look at keeping them open.
A spokesman said pay-phone use had declined by 50 per cent in the past two years alone and calls were still in decline.
The spokesman added any removal of unprofitable pay-phones was carried out within Ofcom guidelines and "where appropriate" with the consent of the local community.
