Fleetwood town centre was brought to a standstill today (Wednesday) after an horrific road accident left a woman trapped under a van.
The woman, who was trapped for around two hours, was later airlifted to hospital in a waiting air ambulance.
She had been crossing Lord Street just after 12am when she came into collision with the large white transit van close to the junction with Mount Street.
With the woman caught underneath the vehicle’s wheels, emergency services rushed to the scene.
Police cordoned off the main high street to allow firefighters and paramedics in to help the woman, and further cordoned off the immediate accident zone with a crowd of concerned people looking on, either side of the inner barrier.
While firefighers worked to help free her, medical staff were treating her at the scene.
With the woman freed from under vehicle, she was carried to the waiting air ambulance just off nearby Dock Street at around 2.15pm.
By 2.30pm, Lord Street remained blocked off between the junctions of Mount Street and Poulton Street, with two trams on either side brought to a halt.
A Fleetwood man in his 50s, who did not wish to be named, said: “It looks serious, it is not a sight for the feint hearted.
“I hope that woman will be alright.”
