A £5m scheme to transform two leisure centres has received the green light from councillors.
Wyre Borough Council’s planning committee yesterday approved the plans for the Poulton and Thornton leisure centres.
Re-development of the Thornton centre, on Victoria Road East, will include a ten-pin bowling alley, indoor skate park and two outdoor floodlit artificial sports pitches.
There will also be a new gym and fitness studio facilities which will make the centre one of the largest on the Fylde coast.
The Poulton site, on Breck Road, will be boosted by a new gym and fitness studio space and a state-of-the-art spa featuring aromatherapy steam and a spa pool. There will also be new changing and shower facilities.
Work is expected to start in early spring by contractors ISG and be completed by the end of 2014. Both centres will remain open while construction takes place.
Coun Lynne Bowen, cabinet member for leisure at Wyre Borough Council, said: “We are determined to reinvent leisure, providing something a little bit different alongside the more traditional leisure facilities that people come to expect.
“Choosing attractions that appeal to visitors as well as residents will widen our customer base, which in turn should reduce the amount of public money needed to run our centres.
“They have an exciting future and I for one can’t wait to see the end results.”
Mike Vernon, YMCA Fylde Coast Leisure Director added: “We are now looking at innovative ways to package the new facilities alongside the existing centres.
“YMCA are committed to providing even better value for money and to increasing the opportunities for more local children, young people, families and adults to participate and enjoy active lifestyles.”
