Ice cream seller Craig McOmish has just the thing to help spur on Fleetwood Town in their forthcoming promotion push.
As the Highbury team prepare for those nailbiting League Two play-offs, Craig is about to unleash his secret weapons...the Cod Army 99 ice cream specials!
Craig is selling the specials, with their red sugar waffle cones and rich strawberry and vanilla ice cream, at the kiosk he runs opposite the North Euston Hotel.
Scotsman Craig, who has lived in Fleetwood for 18 years, reckons the red and white ices, matching Town’s traditional colours, are perfect for Cod Army fans and as a show of support for the football club.
And he hopes that, rather like his special ice creams, Town’s play-off rivals York City – will simply melt away..
Craig, 47, said: “With Town reaching the play-offs, I thought it would be great timing. What Fleetwood have done over the last few years is brilliant, and if they do win promotion it will be an incredible achievement in such a short time.
“The town will obviously get right behind the club, so I though this would be a bit of fun and show support.
“What I like about Fleetwood Town and chairman Anmdy Pilley is that they have put a lot back into the community as well.
“They have put on lots of things for local kids and also brought jobs to the town.
“I’ve got the club’s blessing to do this, and I just hope it catches on and that Fleetwood get promoted!”
Ready to try out the first Cod Army 99 was Matty Blair, a man with a big point to make in this weekend’s Bootham Crescent showdown, having left York City in the summer.
Matty said of the ice cream: “That’s really nice. I think our fans will love it.”
He added: “Although it’s disappointing we haven’t won automatoic promotion, play-offs are exciting for fans and players, and hopefully it will bring a few extra people into Fleetwood.”
