A major sea search for two paddle boarders reported missing was stepped down after they were found safe and well at home.

Three Blackpool lifeboats and the Lytham deep sea lifeboat were scrambled at around 8.15pm on Saturday, October 12, after fishermen called the coastguard.

The emergency call reported two surfers having gone into the water at Cleveleys earlier in the day but they had not returned to their van by 7pm.

Blackpool, Lytham and Fleetwood coastguard crews were also on hand to assist and a police helicopter went up shortly before 9pm to join the search.

But when police traced the owners of the van they found the paddle boarders, a man and a woman, at home in South Shore.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “They were quite suprised when we knocked on their door.”

The search was stepped down at around 10pm.

Ged Lynch, watch assistant at Liverpool Coastguard, said: “Police managed to get their address from the van and when they went round they were at home.

“It’s a good ending.

“It’s better to find them there than go on all night and find bodies.

“We have to investigate everything.”
