A VETERAN Fleetwood scout leader has received a top award.

John Gornall, chairman of 16th Fleetwood Scouts and a certificated leader, was presented with the Chief Scout’s Commendation For Good Service by Ian Porteous, Wyre’s District Commissioner.

John, 58, of Ribble Road, has been involved in scouting for some 20 years.

He said: “I became involved through my son, Michael.

“He was a scout and his group discovered I was good with knots, map reading and outdoor activities.

“It went from there. I’m very proud to have been recognised with this award.”

Ian said: “I am pleased to see that scouting has recognised all the hard work that John has put into the 16th Fleetwood over the past twenty years.”

John’s Son, Michael, who also is a scout leader said: “Over his time at the scout group my dad has helped many young people and leaders.

“I’m really proud of him – he has passed on a great many skills to both me and others, always giving whatever time he could to help anyone he could.

“This would include inviting leaders round for a cup of tea or a lesson in tying knots.”

And Group Scout Leader Ann Shipway added: “I am very grateful for all the work John has put into our group, he is respected by all members of the group.”

The 16th Scout Group is based at the United Reformed Church hall on Dronsfield Road.
