Anniversary Seventy years on, Silvia Way folk commemorate VE Day
Neighbours in Silvia Way held a street party to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
It was absolutely fantastic, it all went to plan and the weather was good as well
They stepped back in time with music from the era, wartime costumes and traditional street party food to celebrate the special day.
It’s not the first time the residents in the quiet cul-de-sac have held a street party, they’ve done it several times before, but they say this one was by far the best.
Organiser Nicola Makin said: “It was absolutely fantastic, it all went to plan and the weather was good as well.
“There were at least 80 people there because everyone invited their families along too.
“We had 1940s music and the sound of the air raid sirens. It brought a lot of memories back for the older ones, they were quite emotional.
“The children had a great time too. We had a treasure hunt and there were two bouncy castles for them.”
The women dressed as land girls and wore fashions from the times, with sweetheart dresses and pinned-up hairstyles.
The children dressed as evacuees and the men donned costumes from the forces.
“We are a close knit street and we say good morning every day, but it was good to actually sit down and talk to each other and find out what everyone’s been up to,” added Nicola.
