It should be a first class occasion when Blackpool’s first citizen unveils a plaque today marking the resort’s place in the history of postage stamps.

Blackpool Tower has featured three times on Special Stamps.

And to honour that fact, the Mayor Coun Peter Callow will unveil a plaque on a postbox in Talbot Square as part of the 50th anniversary of Royal Mail Special Stamps.

Royal Mail is installing 50 plaques with images of some of the most popular stamps on 50 post boxes in locations across the country.

A total of 2,663 Special Stamps have been issued since July 1965 and every new stamp design is approved by The Queen before it is issued.

The Blackpool Tower stamp which is being unveiled on the plaque appeared in 2011, but Blackpool has featured in three sets of Special Stamps – the Picture Postcards set issued in 1994, the A-Z of Britain Series of 2011 and in 2014 as part of the Seaside Architecture set of stamps.

We are proud that one of our postboxes in Blackpool features the stamp of our famous Tower

Royal Mail delivery director Adrian Fielding said: “The UK’s towns and cities have influenced stamp designs over the past 50 years.

“We are proud that one of our postboxes in Blackpool features the stamp of our famous Tower.

“We hope that all our customers and visitors to Blackpool enjoy this Special Stamp plaque and might even take their own photograph as a memento.”

Coun Callow said: “I am delighted Royal Mail has chosen this unique way to celebrate this iconic local landscape, through a stamp on a local postbox, giving the community an opportunity to share in this tribute to the Tower.”

Other stamps on postboxes around the country include Winston Churchill, Bagpuss, Dylan Thomas, Robert Burns, the Giant’s Causeway, York Minster and Sherlock Holmes. The Blackpool postbox stamp is expected to attract attention from locals and tourists alike.
