FLEETWOOD teenagers Kate Gregory and Emily Pook are on the fund-raising trail - and their intended destination is Madrid.
The pair are hoping to attend the World Youth Day event in the Spanish capital in August, as well as an event at the Catholic shrine at Lourdes, France, in July.
The World Youth Day is actually a fortnight of events for young Catholics from across the world, featuring worship, concerts and the chance for different cultures to meet up.
Kate, 17, and Emily, 16, are both parishioners at St Wulstan’s & St Edmund’s RC Church and are hoping to attend the events as representatives of both their church and the Lancaster Diocese.
In order to attend both events the young pilgrims need to raise £2,000 each, and are hoping local people might help with sponsorship or support.
Their first big fund-raiser is a sponsored nine mile Morecambe Bay Walk this Sunday, starting from Catholic retreat Casterigg Manor in Keswick, and organised by staff there.
The girls are also planning bag packing sessions at local stores.
Kate, of Laidleys Walk, told the Weekly News: “Between us we have raised £2,700 so far and we hope to raise £600 from the sponsored walk.”
The pair say they have both returned to the Catholic faith after lapsing for some years, and Emily said: “We feel it gives us guidance and comfort and it means a lot to us.” To sponsor the girls call Kate on 07929 157431.
