Plans for a new community building on the former Fleetwood Pier site could cost £800,000.
George Greenall, director of Fleetwood Plus Community Interest Company, has called a public meeting and is inviting residents to suggest possible uses for the site after claiming to have reached an “agreement in principle” to buy the lease.
But he said his vision of a People’s Pier, for community use, hinges on being able to secure close to £1m.
He said: “We have got to get the community behind the idea and start the fund-raising now.
“If we can get £800,000 that will secure the building and pay for architects and get the surveyors in. It’s a big ask but we feel we can do it.”
He will be looking to attract private investment and public grants but said a large portion of the cash will need to come from fund-raising efforts.
Mr Greenall has been in talks with site owner Mike Simmons – aka entertainer Joey Blower – about taking over the site. Mr Greenall said a decision over future uses for the site will wait until members of the public have had their say.
The public meeting will take place on Monday, August 11, at the North Euston Hotel. Anyone interested is welcome to attend between 6.30 and 8.30pm. Mr Simmons was not available for comment.
