When a hotelier decided to change the name of his hotel from the Vidella Hotel to the Viagra Hotel, it got councillors stirring.

Town hall officials branded the Dickson Road hotel “inappropriate” for a family resort.

And while Blackpool Council was looking into enforcement action, landlord Neil Marshall could also be in hot water for using a brand name without permission.

But he said: “You have got to stand out in a town full of hotels and guesthouses.

“The Vidella had a bad name so we changed the name. People know we are a fun place. We are a budget hotel and if they don’t like what we are they can go elsewhere.”

Claire Smith, president of hotel organisation Stay Blackpool, said: “As a publicity stunt, good on him - but going forward...you may be potentially putting off good quality guests.

“My only concern is you’re going to get some real weirdos that are going to not take it in the context that it’s meant.”

The place is a disgrace and should be closed down. It’s places like this that gives Blackpool the name it has, when if the council looked after the area like it should, it could be so much better

Blackpool Guest House

Thought Blackpool was trying to work on becoming more sophisticated to encourage people who don’t see it as a desirable place to holiday?

I think it’s funny. If you’re there for a stag or hen or just party weekend fair dos. But I wouldn’t want to live next door with a motto like that!

I asked the nurse why they gave my grandad a shot of whiskey and a viagra every night and she said the whiskey was to help him sleep and the viagra to stop him rolling out of bed.
