A manhunt is underway for a callous burglar who asked to use a 90-year-old woman’s phone when his car broke down - before stealing her handbag when her back was turned.

The woman was at home on Maplewood Drive, Thornton, when she answered the door to the man who claimed his vehicle had broken down.

Please be careful who you are answering the door to and be vigilant about who you and your neighbours are allowing in to their homes

He asked if he could use her phone and when she let him in, he asked for a phone book which she then went to find.

But as she searched for the phone book, he began to search her home for valuables.

He found her handbag, hanging on a wall in the hallway, and fled her home without making the phone call.

The handbag was later found at a nearby tram stop missing £50 she had recently withdrawn and other valuable content.

The raid happened at 1pm on May 12 and was posted on Blackpool Police’s Facebook page on Friday, but was only officially released to the media yesterday.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “Please be careful who you are answering the door to and be vigilant about who you and your neighbours are allowing in to their homes.”

The man is described as white, of stocky build, around 5ft 6ins tall, and spoke with a North West accent.

He was clean shaven with short, straight fair-coloured hair.

He was wearing a light coloured tracksuit top.

Call police on 101 with any information.
