Volunteers in Cleveleys rallied round to make sure those who were home alone got a Christmas to remember.

Around 60 people who would have spent the big day isolated enjoyed a fun packed day complete with dinner and presents at Cleveleys Park Methodist Church.

It was organised by Clevleys councillor Andrea Kay with help from the church, local businesses and a team of 13 helpers who gave up their own Christmas day time.

It is the eighth year that the team has been putting on the event for elderly people and those who would otherwise spend, what for most people is a special family day, by themselves.

Andrea said: “It was really wonderful We welcomed back our regulars who have been for several years and we also met some new people which was fantastic.

“We have one lady in her 90s who always gives us a poem by Pam Ayres about the fairy at the top of the Christmas tree.

Making a difference to someone’s life is a blessing

“We had a karaoke and Christmas dinner and presents for everyone.

“Sometimes it is just to give people a break as a carer for their loved ones.

“It so important to share Christmas Day with residents who would normally be on their own.

“We brought people in from 10am and it went on until about 3pm. By the time we were all finished it was 4.30pm and the volunteers were all tired.

“Taking time out and making a difference to someone’s life is a blessing and I feel blessed to be able to take part.

“I would like to say a big thank you to reverend Michael Payne and his wife Anita for all their support. Also to everyone who volunteered on the day.

“Finally I have to say thank you to everyone who supported the event Asda, Morrisons Marks and Spencer, Pauline from pheasant wood for the beautiful cake the staff off south pier, Co-op Funeral Services and the many residents who donated a gift for the guests.”
