“It’s different maybe, but totally absorbing, said Maria Desmond, chairman of Kirkham IMB.

“The job is not everybody’s cup of tea. But if anybody is looking for a new challenge then this could be for them.”

Kirkham is an open prison, Category D with a capacity of 657 men. Its role is to try to furnish them with the necessary skills to ensure they find employment when released and do not reoffend.

The job of the IMB is to ensure Home Office rules and Ministry of Justice regulations are properly applied and that the highest standards of care and decency are maintained.
