TALKS OVER GYMNASTS' NEW HOME
FLEETWOOD Gymnasium Club for Young People is hoping to make progress this month in the search for a new site.
FLEETWOOD Gymnasium Club for Young People is hoping to make progress this month in the search for a new site.
The current Rhyl Street facilities will have to close at the end of the year because of health and safety problems with the building.
The gym has served the community for 112 years and currently has 300 members.
Major investment is needed to bring the building up to a high enough standard to meet strict safety regulations.
The gym has decided to invest in a new sports and community centre for Fleetwood instead.
Planning permission has been granted for facilities on spare land at Highbury Fleetwood Football Ground.
However the gym now hopes to get permission to carry out the same plans at Memorial Park instead.
Wyre Borough Council is currently considering these proposals.
The development would include community and sports facilities, a cafe and public toilets.
Tom Norton, chairman of Fleetwood Gym and voluntary youth leader, said: "We have been trying for quite a number of years to build a state of the art sports and community activity centre."
The Rhyl Street site will be sold to a developer, possibly for accommodation, and the money raised will be put towards the new facilities.
Fleetwood Gym will hold a public meeting to discuss it's plans on Wednesday, April 19 at 7.30pm at Fleetwood Football Club, Park Avenue.
