Dream finally comes true for 'Cod Head'

DIEHARD Fleetwood Town fan Neil Buston is in dreamland.

Proud "Cod Head" Neil, well known in the town's darts fraternity, is so fanatical about the Highbury club that he has missed just one game this season, and one game last.

He has backed his local club through lean times, and was a member of the "pound a week direct debit club" a decade ago when Fleetwood man Jim Betmead revived the club from the ashes of it folding and dying.

So to see his beloved club rise to within just two division of the Football League, and all set for a gleaming new stadium, is something he could only have dreamt about.

Neil was there, with 2,666 others, to see Town's glorious promotion on Saturday.

He says: "To be honest it hasn't sunk in yet. It is absolutely unbelievable. Our chairman Andy Pillley has been awesome, because he has totally transformed this club.

"But then everyone involved has been brilliant too - our manager Tony Greenwood, the assistant manager, all the way down to our kitman."

Neil has travvled to away matches with the Cod Army on freezing and wet winter nighs, helping the club acheive its enviable record of having the best supporters in the Unibond Premier League.

Explaining why, he said: "It's my home town club - and you just cannot beat the feeling you get when you have your best mates there with you - and not just the supporters.

"We know players from the club as pals, and have even gone drinking with chairman Andy Pilley.

"He is a top man - he is not just a good businessman but he knows all the regular supporters by their first names and always has time for them."

Neil's most nerve-wracking moment came when Fleetwood needed to win their second-from last game of the season away to Leek – and went a goal down before winning a vital game.

He said: "Nerve-wracking does not describe it. Winning that game was the best feeling in the world. Saturday was the perfect finish."
