Despite the disappointment residents can still say yes to their own parish council

CAMPAIGNERS for a Fleetwood parish council are unhappy and bitterly disappointed that last week's decision at Wyre Civic centre did not go as they hoped.

Fleetwood Action Group members say that Wyre Council had no grounds whatsoever to do anything else but approve the bid for the parish council at the key meeting last week.

They argue that they have done everything needed, including obtaining the 200-plus names for the petition necessary to set the process in motion.

It is easy to understand their frustration.

In truth there does not appear to be any reason, according to the rules of setting up a parish council, why the bid could not have been accepted.

They are now hoping the Wyre Council decision can be overturned and the parish council motion approved without the need of a public vote.

However, despite the disappointment of the Fleetwood Action Group, how bad was last week’s decision for those who want a parish council?

At the end of the day, the parish council idea has not been knocked back. It will go to a referendum.

And if there is the genuine support for this extra tier of local government, Fleetwood people will back it.

At least they will be armed with all the facts.

In many ways, it makes sense that the very people who would benefit from a town council – and have to pay for it – get to vote on it.

And if Fleetwood folk want it, there can surely now be no obstacles to stop it from happening...
