Animal lover Katrina Beardsworth decided to use her regular swimming sessions to help a good cause close to her heart.

Katrina, 38, of Queens Terrace, Fleetwood, staged a sponsored swim to raise money for Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary in St Annes.

She swam 30 lengths at Fleetwood YMCA Leisure centre, and thanks to family and friends who have sponsored her, she has now raised more than £300. Katrina, who has learning difficulties and lives in independent living accommodation where she is supported by key workers, has got two cats of her own.

Asked how she felt about the challenge, she gave the thumbs up before successfully completing the 30 lengths.

Her key worker, Pat Gerrard, said: “Katrina has worked so hard to be able to swim 30 lengths in one go.

“She loves animals and wanted to help Easterleigh because of the wonderful work it does.”

Among those supporting Katrina was proud mum Pam Beardworth, of Albany Road, Fleetwood.

Pam said: “Katrina didn’t really like swimming when she was younger but look at her now.

“What she’s doing is great.”

A presentation will be made in the near future and Mandy Leigh, who runs Easterleigh, said: “It costs £5,000 a week to run the sanctuary so the money will be a huge help.”
