Rugby fans are being invited to an event in memory of a former Blackpool doctor.

Thornton Cleveleys Rugby Club is holding its annual tournament today in memory of Robbie McKendrick.

The 35 year old, who was killed in a head-on collision with an HGV on Amounderness Way in July 2008, had been a popular member of the rugby club.

Teams from as far afield as Glasgow are competing in the rugby tens competition for the Robbie McKendrick Cup and the Richard Hesketh Plate.

Money raised on the day will go to the club and to children’s charities helping youngsters in India suffering from cleft palates.

The event begins at 11am at Thornton Cleveleys Rugby Club which is based at the YMCA on Victoria Road, Thornton.

Attractions include a barbecue, music and an indoor play area for children, and admission is free.
