A Shaping yYour Neighbourhood grant has helped improve facilities at The Jean Stansfield Memorial Park in Poulton.
The Friends of Jean Stansfield Park is a group of volunteers working towards improving the play areas and facilities on and around the park – part of Vicarage Park.
The volunteers have been handed a £5,000 grant from Wyre Council to improve the children’s play area.
Planting has helped to make the park a more pleasant place to sit and relax.
And the Friends are now gearing up for a St George’s-themed fun day in the park tomorrow.
Steph Hasty, chairman of The friends group, said: “We have installed a much-needed new set of swings and basket swing into the park.
We have also installed a new children’s picnic table into the toddler area ready for summer
“We have also installed a new children’s picnic table into the toddler area ready for summer.
“The volunteers have continued to fund-raise and are working very hard for a better park.
“We will continue to work alongside Wyre Borough Council to try and achieve this.”
The friends are putting on a St George’s Day event tomorrow. Volunteers have called for all ‘knights and princesses’ to join in the park for a fancy dress competition, and there will be a raffle, entertainment by Grandaddy and Nana Trumble, Fylde Ukulele and the Windmill Players performing a St George and The Dragon re-enactment.
There will also be a mini fair, bungee trampolines, face painting, stalls and crafts and many more activities.
Coun Lesley McKay, said: “We chose to support this bid through the Shaping your Neighbourhood initiative as it is a fantastic facility for all young families to use and really drives forward the essence of the scheme which is local community groups or residents working with Wyre Council to improve their neighbourhoods.
“I am a mum with a three and a half year old and a baby- I am at the park all the time and know how great it is for the community. It is a place that parents can take their children and know they are in a safe, well kept environment that provides interesting, multi sensory play equipment.
“Vicarage Park is an absolute credit to all the members of the group.”
The Shaping your Neighbourhood fund is designed to involve people and communities in identifying the issues, priorities and solutions around their neighbourhoods.
Since being launched in 2012, more than £450,000 in grants has been given to projects across Wyre. This year, a further £60,000 is available for people to bid for.
