He ordered frightened staff at The Co-Op Food in Larkholme Parade to open a safe at 7pm last night, but ran off after a panic alarm was pressed.

And 45 minutes later, he demanded cash from the till at the Browned Off tanning salon in Poulton Road but fled after being 'rebuffed', police said.

Officers have now appealed for the public's help in catching the prospective thief, described as wearing a hooded black jacket with silver zip, black balaclava, dark trousers, trainers with socks over them, and gloves.
