LOCALS are being urged to try their hand at running a market stall at Fleetwood Market – for just £5 a time on Thursdays through July.
The initiative started as part of celebrations of National Market Day last Saturday but Wyre Council’s market manager Julian Brent said: “We want to give locals more of an opportunity to see if the market life is for them.
“The price offers a great taster at one of Lancashire’s best and busiest and most traditional markets.
“And they can count on the support of other traders too as new stalls regenerate markets. The offer is open to all, whether an established trader looking for a new opportunity, or someone thinking of starting market trading.”
Second generation market trader Bill Brown (above), who runs a towel stall his father started back in 1947, said: “It’s the more the merrier as I’m concerned. I prefer working outside because you’re in the fresh air, you meet people and it’s a very nice sociable business.
“There’s not the living in it there once was but that’s not always the be all and end all. I’ve given up my other stalls at other markets but not this one. There’s something special about Fleetwood.”
Thirty outdoor stalls are on offer for new traders under the Love Your Local Market campaign with stalls available for £5 every Thursday through to the end of July.
Fleetwood Market has traded at its Adelaide Street site for over 170 years. The market currently has over 250 stalls offering a full range of traditional market goods open Tuesdays, Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays all year.
