Mr Meekins was walking with his wife Paula after celebrating her birthday when he was hit by a car that mounted the pavement in Princes Way, close to the Cadets Centre and Fleetwood Golf Club.

He suffered horrific injuries and died at the scene.

His death sparked an urgent appeal by police to find the driver who failed to stop.

A 23-year-old man from Fleetwood later handed himself into police, and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He was later bailed and ordered to report back to police on Wednesday, March 29, the force said.

In tributes, Mr Meekins, who owned Broadwater Stores in Meadow Avenue, was described as a ‘gentleman’ and a ‘fantastic boss’.
