Four pupils from Birla High School in Kolkata, India, arrived in the port last month to visit the town along with Cardinal Allen High School.

The British Council Connecting Classrooms scheme will see four Fleetwood pupils visit India in October to learn more about the South Asian country’s culture.

During their stay pupils took part in lessons about Bollywood dancing and Yoga, as well as trips to Fleetwood Memorial Park, Old Trafford and Liverpool One.

Andy Harding, Cardinal Allen’s community co-ordinator, said: “Our children learn about different cultures while they are here.

“They have got a big project on the issue of women in society, but in Fleetwood we are more concerned with domestic violence, and we had workshops with the children to look at the issues.

“All the children look at it from both points of view and it makes for interesting discussions.

“They do a lot of activities.

“They had a few trips to Old Trafford and listened a talk about how Manchester United works with the international community, and to Liverpool to see their cathedrals.

“When we go over there we work with the children and organise events for them. It’s all good stuff.”
