Fran's fund-raiser is a cut above for cancer charity

Fleetwood hairdresser David Taylor holds up some of the hair that Fran Shaw had cut as part off a fund-raiser for the Fleetwood Cancer Research group.

But when she decided it was time for a new style, Fran realised she might be able to help a good cause at the same time.

So she made arrange ments with Fleetwood Cancer Research Committee to get sponsored and officially donate the funds to the charity, which supports research at Christie Hospital, Manchester.

In addition to this, Fran also donated her dark locks to the Little Princess Trust so they can be used to make wigs for cancer patients who lost hair during chemotherapy.

Fran, 52, of Victoria Street, had her long hair cut and fashioned into a stylish bob at David Taylor’s hairdressing salon on Lord Street, Fleetwood, and David kindly donated his fee to the cause.

Fran, originally from Birmingham, said: “I love my new hair but I’m even happier that I’ve been able to help a really good cause.”

On the fund-raising front, Fran’s partner Derek Grainger, who works at chimney firm Mi-Flues Ltd in Blackpool, raised £350 with help from colleagues.

Fran added: “I’d like to thank the New Venture club in Fleetwood, Mi flues Blackpool and the Blackpool chapter of Freemasons Fellowship for their support.”

Susan Pearce, chair of Fleetwood Cancer Research Committee, said: “We’re grateful for Fran’s unique fund-raiser.”

Fleetwood Cancer Research Committee raise money through regular coffee mornings at different venues in the town. A recent one at the New Venture Hall in Warren Street raised £300.

The next one is at the Senior Citizens Hall in Warrenhurst Road at 10am on Friday June 16.
