FLY-TIPPERS who struck in a Fleetwood neighbourhood have been nabbed by Wyre Council.

Three tonnes of rubbish were dumped in alleys between Heathfield Road an Whinfield Avenue and also another alley off Orchard Drive.

But council sleuths found clues in the rubbish which linked it to a restaurant in Blackpool.

Working with Blackpool Council, they established that the restaurant owner had paid someone to dump the rubbish on his behalf.

The restaurant owner was given a £300 fixed-penalty notice and a bill for the cost of removing the rubbish.

The was included general building rubbish, including carpets, furniture, wood, plaster board, a toilet and cistern, drainpipes, glass and rubbish bags.

Wyre removed the mess but specialist lifting equipment had to be used and it took six hours to dispose of everything and clean up the area.

Mark Billington, Head of Operations at Wyre Council, said: “The council’s stance on fly tipping is clear; firstly, we work quickly to remove rubbish from our streets and secondly, we will do everything in our power to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

“Arranging for someone else to dump rubbish on your behalf does not absolve you of responsibility.

“People are required by law to check that anyone who removes waste from their property is registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier.

“Fly tipping blights our neighbourhoods and undermines our work with communities to keep Wyre a clean and tidy place to live.

“We rely on members of the public reporting fly tipping to us in order to deal with it swiftly and catch the offenders.”

The people who carried out the fly tipping in this incident have not yet been identified.

Residents of Wyre can report fly tipping at wyre.gov.uk/flytipping or call 01253 891000.

Further information about legal responsibilities regarding removal of waste can also be found at wyre.gov.uk/waste.
