AN alpaca farm swamped by floods has received a welcome cash boost.

Judy Ainley runs The Alpaca Experience at Ivy Dene Farm in Blackpool Road, St Michaels on Wyre, as an alternative centre for young children and adults suffering from mental health issues.

After the farm was swamped by flood water during the Christmas period, Judith single-handedly had to rescue the animals throughout the night, and has been left facing high vet bills not covered by her insurance.

Now the Lancashire Flood Appeal run by the Community Foundation for Lancashire has helped her recover some of the costs.

Karen Morris, of the Community Foundation for Lancashire, said: “The fund is about helping communities across Lancashire and filling needs that other funds can’t.

“A little amount of money can make a huge difference.

“At the alpaca farm we were able to help them back into a position where they can get back to some kind of normality.

“It was very traumatic for the owners and had a real knock-on effect for the children who rely on it.

“We’re delighted to have been able to help.”

The Lancashire Flood Appeal was launched on December 8, 2015 to raise funds to directly support individuals, families and community organisations in the areas affected by the floods.

It provides emergency response support and clean-up support via charitable donations and grants.

It has so far raised over £1m from independent fund-raising.

So far, £490,000 of grants have been distributed by the Community Foundation to more than 220 households, helping thousands of people across the county.
