English students scaled new heights in their bid to get top GCSE grades.

Youngsters from Fleetwood High School’s Year 11 enjoyed outdoor pursuits as well as English language revision at the Rock and River Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Mawdesley.

The 12 teenagers and three staff members from the Broadway school, spent three days at the centre as part of their exam preparation.

The youngsters completed seven hours of study to do a whole mock English exam paper each, to build confidence ahead of their final exam on June 3.

But it wasn’t all work and no play. The students also rock climbed, abseiled, competed in archery, and tested their strength, bravery and endurance to climb 40ft poles.

Natalie Collister, head of English, said: “The students were a credit to the school, their families and themselves for their approach in all the activities.

“The English work was very intensive and it was great to allow students to burn off their energy on the other activities”.

The school is looking at having a return visit to the centre in the Autumn term with the next Year 11 cohort.
