A young woman today opened her heart to urge domestic violence victims to speak out after her thug boyfriend was convicted of a campaign of abuse.

Nathan Lightowler subjected teenager Natasha Wilcock to a series of attacks, including putting his hands round her neck and trying to strangle her.

Lightowler, from Bispham, escaped with a suspended jail term – but today his victim bravely spoke out to encourage other victims not to fall prey to violent partners.

In an interview with The Gazette, the 19-year-old bar worker said: “I wanted to speak out to encourage people to report it if it happens to them.

“I didn’t think it would happen to me. I thought it just happened to women, married with children, but it can happen to anyone.

“And they might not be as lucky.

“What he has done will haunt me for the rest of my life.”
