The masked trio targeted the bank at 6.50pm on Thursday as two G4S guards were replenishing the cash machine.

Police said the gang rushed the bank doors as one of the men, believed to be armed with a sledge hammer, threatened the guards.

A second man was holding a Stihl saw which was used to gain access to the ATM.

Detectives said they believe four people were involved but only three people attacked the guards.

The robbers took four cash cartridges containing an undisclosed amount of money and left the scene in a white Seat Leon, driven by a fourth man.

That vehicle was found abandoned a short time later nearby on Ellerbeck Road close to Admiral Sounds. Officers have established that this vehicle was stolen from the Eccles area of Greater Manchester.

It is thought that after abandoning the Seat Leon, they have then got into a silver BMW which was last seen in the vicinity of Gerrards Gardens, Poulton, around 7.30pm.

Det Insp Phil Jones said: “Fortunately, no one was seriously injured but understandably everyone involved has been left extremely shaken by what can only be described as a terrifying ordeal.

“An investigation is underway and I would appeal to anybody that may have witnessed either the robbery itself, the offenders leaving the scene or suspicious activity leading up to the robbery to contact police on 101.”

Witness descriptions of offenders are released

Police have released detailed descriptions of those thought to be involved.

Witnesses describe two of the men as being around 5ft 7in tall and of stocky build. One was wearing a black balaclava type mask and a white or light coloured hoodie type top. The second man was also wearing a balaclava mask and a baby blue coloured hoodie type top.

The car is described as a two door modern car and had two people inside. The passenger is described as a white man, skinny build , 5ft 11in tall, stubbled and aged in his late 20s. He was wearing a grey coloured hoodie type top.

The driver was also white and appeared to be of bigger build with short hair.
